Spring Into History With The Southern Museum!

2/13/09

As winter fades away, the Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History is blooming with events that offer both fun and educational looks back at the Civil War.

“We're excited to present one of our more popular events coming up in March,” said Michael Stoll, interpreter for the Museum. “The Civil War Music Show is a collaboration of several area churches and local musicians. The songs they sing are still recognized today, including ‘Goober Peas' and ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic.'” The event, which is part of the Kennesaw Historical Society Lecture Series and is co-sponsored by the Kennesaw Historical Society and the Southern Museum, will take place on March 14 from 2 to 3 PM, and is free to the public. Visitors who would like to tour the Museum either before or after the event should enter through the front entrance.

Local living historians will be on hand that day at an encampment from 10 AM until 4 PM, offering glimpses of life during that time period with various demonstrations, including cannon firings.

Also coming up is the Home School Day event, which will be on March 9 from 10 AM to 2 PM. “This is an excellent opportunity for our area home school groups to come to the Museum and take part in our programs,” explained Wesleigh Reaves, group tour coordinator. “The event in March will focus on historic hobbies, and will prominently feature our newest exhibit, “William Wardrop Creations: Man's Imagination and Machines.” There will also be sessions on how to get started in reenacting, along with several hands-on activities.”

Special admission rates for Home School Days are $4 per student from four to 12 years old, $6 per adult, and is free for children three and under.

For more information on either of the above programs, contact the Education Department at 770-427-2117, ext. 3174, or programs@southernmuseum.org.
